Cleawox Lake
Cleawox Lake is a quiet freshwater lake tucked inside Jesse M. Honeyman State Park, bordered on one side by forested campgrounds and on the other by towering sand dunes that roll toward the Pacific. The contrast between the calm reflective water and the pale sculptural dunes is what makes this place special for photography. Work from the sandy shoreline along the western edge to capture the dunes rising dramatically behind the lake, or wade into the shallows slightly for a low angle that emphasizes reflections of the dune faces in the still water. Early morning is ideal when the light is soft, the surface is glassy, and foot traffic is minimal. A wide angle lens handles the full sweep of dunes and sky well, though a short telephoto lets you compress the layers of water, sand, and tree line. Parking is straightforward inside the state park and the lake is a short walk from the main lot. (Dunes City, Oregon, United States)
