Castle Geyser is one of Yellowstone's most architecturally striking thermal features, its massive sinter cone rising several meters above the basin floor with a textured, castle-like silhouette that rewards wide and medium focal lengths equally. You can circle the entire cone on the boardwalk, so take time to find the angle where steam venting from the top catches backlight against a blue sky or dramatic clouds. Shooting low from the boardwalk level exaggerates the cone's height and makes it feel monumental. Early morning gives you the best steam visibility as cooler air temperatures cause the water vapor to billow dramatically, and the golden hour light warms the grey sinter to almost amber tones. Castle erupts roughly every 10 to 12 hours with eruptions lasting around 20 minutes, so check the predicted eruption times posted at the Old Faithful Visitor Center before you arrive. A 24-70mm lens covers most compositions well. (Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, United States)
