The Firehole River winds through one of Yellowstone's most surreal thermal landscapes, where steaming geysers and hot springs feed warm, mineral-rich water directly into the river channel, creating a scene unlike anything else on earth. At Black Sand Basin, Cliff Geyser erupts close to the riverbank, giving you a strong foreground subject to pair with the misty, steam-filled background. A wide-angle lens works well here to capture both the geyser activity and the river in a single frame, while a longer lens lets you compress the steam against the surrounding forest and sky. Overcast days are ideal since flat light softens the steam and brings out the vivid colors of the thermal pools, but early morning often delivers the most dramatic steam volume as cooler air meets the warm water. The boardwalk keeps you safely positioned and offers clean sightlines along the river without obstruction. (Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, United States)
