Cutty Sark

Cutty Sark - Photo by Shawn M. Kent1 / 1

The Cutty Sark is one of the last surviving tea clippers in the world, dry-docked in Greenwich and raised on a glass-and-steel platform that lets you shoot the full copper-toned hull from below, an angle that makes the ship feel enormous and dramatic. Get low and wide with a 16-24mm lens to capture the sweeping bow and bowsprit against the sky, or step back toward the river path for a broader composition that includes the rigging and masts. The surrounding plaza has clean lines that work well as leading elements into the frame. Overcast days soften the light and reduce harsh reflections on the hull, but golden hour brings warm tones to the copper cladding that look exceptional. The site is fully accessible, situated in the heart of Greenwich near the Cutty Sark DLR station, and the open plaza gives you plenty of room to work different focal lengths and perspectives.
