Greenwich Pier

Greenwich Pier puts you directly on the south bank of the Thames with an unobstructed view across the water toward Canary Wharf, making it one of the most rewarding cityscape spots in London. The pier itself extends out over the river, giving you a slight separation from the bank and letting you frame the glittering tower cluster reflected in the water below. Shoot from the end of the pier looking northeast for the classic composition, or turn slightly to include the Cutty Sark and Greenwich waterfront buildings for added foreground interest. Blue hour and the hour after sunset are ideal, when the sky still holds color and the office lights of Canary Wharf are fully lit. A telephoto lens in the 70 to 200mm range helps compress the towers for a dramatic effect. The pier is freely accessible and rarely crowded after dark. (London, England, United Kingdom)
