Dverghamrar is a compact but striking basalt formation on Iceland's South Coast, where hexagonal columnar basalt rises in a near-perfect horseshoe arc, capped by a contrasting layer of cube-jointed rock that gives the cliffs an almost architectural quality. You can walk right up to the columns and shoot from inside the curve, using the curved wall as a natural frame around the surrounding lava field and sky. A wide angle lens works well here to emphasize the geometry and scale of the columns, while a longer focal length lets you isolate individual hexagonal patterns and texture. Overcast days are ideal since soft, even light reveals the detail in the dark basalt without harsh shadows. The site sits just off the Ring Road and is easy to reach with a short walk from the parking area, making it a quick but rewarding stop. (South Iceland, Iceland)
