Wildcat Trail is a 3.2-mile loop that circles directly around the base of West Mitten Butte in Monument Valley, putting you right at the foot of one of the American Southwest's most iconic sandstone formations. Unlike the distant views you get from the visitor center overlook, this trail takes you close enough to feel the scale of the buttes and capture dramatic upward angles that emphasize their towering height. Shoot from the western side of the loop at sunrise for warm golden light raking across the red sandstone, or stay into the blue hour for a quieter, cooler palette. A wide-angle lens works well for foreground-to-sky compositions using the sandy desert floor and scattered brush as leading elements. The trail is unpaved and sandy in sections, so sturdy shoes help. Arrive early to beat the crowds since this is the only self-guided hike in the park. (Oljato-Monument Valley, Arizona, United States)
