Eye of the Wind

Rising above the summit of Grouse Mountain, this sleek wind turbine is the only one in the world with a transparent glass viewing pod at its top, making it a striking architectural subject against the backdrop of Vancouver and the surrounding peaks. From the mountain's upper area, you can frame the turbine with the city skyline far below, or position yourself to include the forested ridgelines and snowcapped mountains as a backdrop. Wide to mid-range focal lengths work well for capturing the full tower in context, while a telephoto lets you isolate the pod and blades against the sky. Overcast days soften the light and bring out the moody alpine atmosphere, but clear days reward you with that dramatic city-to-mountain panorama stretching all the way to the Fraser Valley. The turbine is accessible after taking the Grouse Mountain gondola, and the open summit area gives you room to move around and find your best angle. (North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada)
