Forrest Gump Point
This stretch of U.S. Highway 163 in the heart of the Navajo Nation became famous as the spot where Forrest Gump stopped his cross-country run, and the view explains why it was chosen. The road cuts a straight line through the desert toward Monument Valley, with the Mittens and Merrick Butte rising dramatically on the horizon, making it one of the most recognizable vanishing point compositions in photography. Stand in the center of the road and shoot low with a wide angle lens to exaggerate the perspective and draw the eye deep into the frame toward the monuments. Early morning gives you soft, warm light raking across the red rock formations with minimal traffic; midday sun is harsh and flat. Be mindful of passing vehicles and never linger in the lane. The gravel pullout on the side of the road makes parking simple and access is straightforward from the highway. (Mexican Hat, Utah, United States)
