Winthrop Mill
Tucked beneath the roaring lanes of Interstate 95, Winthrop Mill is one of New England's oldest surviving grist mill structures, and the contrast between its weathered colonial stonework and the massive highway overhead makes for a genuinely compelling image. The mill sits astride Briggs Brook, so your best compositions use the water as a foreground element, shooting from the brook's edge to capture reflections of the historic stone walls and the dramatic underside of the highway above. The juxtaposition of 17th-century infrastructure and modern concrete is the real story here, so don't ignore the highway as a visual element. Overcast days work well by softening harsh shadows on the stonework, while golden hour adds warmth to the old stone. A wide-angle lens helps you work in the tight space beneath the bridges. Street parking on Mill Street is limited, so plan accordingly. (New London, Connecticut, United States)
