Gold Star Memorial Bridge
Twin steel truss spans stretching nearly a mile across the Thames River, the Gold Star Memorial Bridge offers dramatic industrial scale against a working waterway used by Navy submarines, commercial traffic, and recreational boats. You are not shooting from the bridge itself but rather from the shoreline on either side, where the full profile of the parallel spans comes into view. The Groton side near the submarine base gives you a strong foreground with nautical details, while the New London bank offers cleaner sightlines with the river mouth opening toward Long Island Sound. A wide to mid-range zoom works well for compressing the twin spans together. Early morning light from the east catches the steel structure directly and reflects off the Thames with minimal boat traffic and haze. Low tide exposes rocky shoreline that adds foreground texture and reflection opportunities. Street parking is available near the waterfront on both sides of the river.
