Garden of the Phoenix
The Garden of the Phoenix sits on a small island in Jackson Park's Wooded Island, accessible by a pair of footbridges that make excellent leading lines into the scene. The traditional Japanese architecture, koi pond, stone lanterns, and manicured plantings give you a lot to work with year-round, but the garden peaks in late April to early May when the cherry blossoms bloom in soft pink clusters around the Columbia Basin. Shoot from the bridges looking inward for framing the garden's entrance, or get low near the pond to reflect the pagoda and surrounding trees in the water. Overcast mornings are ideal here since they soften the light and reduce harsh shadows through the canopy; golden hour adds warmth but can be tricky under the dense tree cover. A mid-range zoom or a 35mm prime works well for most compositions. The garden sees moderate foot traffic, so arriving early on weekdays gives you cleaner shots.
