Rockefeller Chapel is a towering Gothic Revival landmark on the University of Chicago campus, with soaring stone facades, intricate carvings, and dramatic vertical lines that reward careful composition. The exterior is most striking when you position yourself low and use a wide-angle lens to emphasize the height of the tower, letting the vertical elements draw the eye upward. Shooting from the grassy quad to the south gives you a clean foreground with room to include the full facade. Overcast days work exceptionally well here, as soft diffused light brings out the texture in the limestone without harsh shadows. Early morning on clear days can produce warm raking light across the carved stonework. The interior is also worth exploring, with long nave lines, stained glass, and vaulted ceilings that suit a wide or medium prime lens. The chapel is generally accessible during university hours.
