Getty Tomb
Tucked within Graceland Cemetery, the Getty Tomb is one of Louis Sullivan's most celebrated works and a landmark of American architectural history. The 1890 mausoleum features Sullivan's signature ornamental ironwork across its bronze door, with intricate geometric and organic patterns that reward close inspection and macro photography. Shoot the facade straight on to emphasize the symmetry of the arched entrance, or move to a three-quarter angle to capture the depth and texture of the limestone block construction. Overcast days are ideal since they eliminate harsh shadows and let the fine surface detail read clearly; early morning on sunny days works if you want dramatic raking light across the carved stone. A standard to short telephoto lens in the 50 to 85mm range works well for isolating the door and decorative elements. The tomb is accessible on foot from the cemetery entrance, and the surrounding trees provide natural framing options. (Chicago, Illinois, United States)
