Tucked within the serene grounds of Graceland Cemetery, this striking 1889 Egyptian Revival mausoleum is one of Chicago's most photogenic architectural gems. The tomb's dark polished granite, severe geometric form, and sphinx guardians create a bold, timeless presence that rewards careful composition. Approach straight-on to emphasize the monumental symmetry, or work from a low angle to make the structure loom against the sky. Overcast days are ideal, softening harsh shadows and bringing out the deep luster of the granite without blown highlights. Early morning on clear days can work well too, with raking light revealing the texture of the stone. A 35mm to 85mm lens handles the space well; the tomb sits close enough to surrounding trees that you can use foliage to frame the structure naturally. Graceland is open during daylight hours and easy to navigate on foot. (Chicago, Illinois, United States)
