Greenland Dock

Greenland Dock is a historic wet dock in Rotherhithe, surrounded by converted warehouses, modern residential buildings, and calm reflective water that rarely sees the tourist crowds found elsewhere in London. The rectangular basin gives you strong geometric compositions, with the symmetry of the dock walls and their reflections working particularly well when the water is still. Walk the full perimeter to find different angles; the southern end offers clean lines looking north toward the more characterful older buildings, while the corners give you converging perspectives that draw the eye across the water. Early morning is ideal, when the light is soft, mist sometimes sits on the surface, and you will have the place almost entirely to yourself. A wide angle lens suits the expansive reflections, though a short telephoto helps compress the architecture on the far bank. Street parking is available nearby and the dock is a short walk from Surrey Quays station. (London, England, United Kingdom)
