Grótta Island
Grótta is a small tidal island off the western tip of the Seltjarnarnes peninsula, accessible only at low tide via a narrow sandbar that emerges for roughly six hours. The lighthouse standing alone on the island is the main subject, and it photographs beautifully from the causeway itself, using the wet sandbar as a reflective foreground leading your eye toward the structure. This is one of Reykjavik's best northern lights locations, with the city glow providing ambient color to the sky while the lighthouse anchors the foreground. Shoot during the blue hour for a balance of natural and artificial light, or on clear winter nights for aurora displays. Check tide tables carefully before heading out, and note that the island is closed from May 1 to July 15 for nesting season. A wide angle lens works well here to take in the sky and the reflective tidal flats. (Seltjarnarnes, Capital Region, Iceland)
