Northern Lights View Point
This waterfront viewpoint on the Seltjarnarnes peninsula puts you right at the edge of the North Atlantic with minimal light pollution and wide open skies, making it one of the more accessible aurora shooting spots near Reykjavik. The low, flat shoreline gives you a clean horizon and the opportunity to include reflections in tide pools or wet rocks in the foreground, which adds depth to aurora shots that a plain sky composition would otherwise lack. Face north or northeast for the strongest aurora activity, and experiment with the rocky coastline as a foreground anchor. Long exposures between 5 and 15 seconds work well here depending on aurora intensity; bring a wide angle lens in the 14 to 24mm range to capture the full sweep of the sky. The path along the shore is easy to walk, and parking is available nearby at the Grotta lighthouse area. (Seltjarnarnes, Capital Region, Iceland)
