Gunnuhver is Iceland's largest hot spring area, a raw and dramatic geothermal field on the Reykjanes Peninsula where boiling mud pools and powerful steam vents create a constantly shifting, otherworldly atmosphere. The rising plumes of sulfuric steam are your main subject here, and the best approach is to position yourself so the vents backlight the vapor columns, which makes them glow against dark sky or moody overcast backgrounds. Overcast days are actually ideal since flat light reveals the vivid rust, orange, and yellow mineral deposits in the mud fields without harsh shadows. A mid-range zoom in the 24-70mm range gives you flexibility to capture both the wider landscape and tighter details of the bubbling pools. Stick to the designated boardwalks as the ground is dangerously unstable, and be mindful of wind direction since the steam and sulfur can quickly obscure your lens or your view.
