Hvalsneskirkja is a small 19th-century stone church sitting alone on the Reykjanes Peninsula, surrounded by open lava fields, rolling grass, and unobstructed sky in every direction. The combination of the rough-hewn stonework, the classic white window frames, and the sparse Icelandic landscape makes it an incredibly photogenic subject. Shoot from low and wide to emphasize the church against dramatic clouds or a moody sky, or use the old stone perimeter wall and gate as a foreground element to add depth. The historic graveyard on the side of the church adds texture and character worth including in your compositions. Overcast days work beautifully here, softening the light and bringing out the greens of the surrounding grass, while golden hour gives the stonework a warm glow. A wide angle lens in the 16-24mm range suits this location well, and the site is easy to reach by car with parking directly alongside. (Hvalnes, Suðurnes, Iceland)
