H.R. MacMillan Space Centre
The H.R. MacMillan Space Centre sits within Vanier Park near the waterfront in Vancouver, its distinctive copper-clad dome making it one of the more architecturally striking museum buildings in the city. The curved roofline and geometric form photograph well on their own, but the real opportunity is combining the building with George Norris's abstract sculpture "The Crab" in the foreground, which adds texture and visual interest to the frame. A wide angle lens works well here to capture both the sculpture and the dome together without crowding the composition. Overcast days are ideal since the diffused light reduces harsh shadows on the metallic surfaces and brings out the warm tones of the copper cladding. The park setting gives you room to step back and work the angles, and the proximity to the waterfront means you can also incorporate the surrounding greenery or distant mountain views.
