Lahaina Harbor
Lahaina Harbor sits on the western coast of Maui, where a historic stone breakwater curves out into the Pacific and shelters a marina full of fishing boats, sailboats, and charter vessels. The breakwater itself is one of the most compelling compositional elements here; walk out along it to use the curved wall as a leading line with the open ocean on one side and the harbor on the other. Sunset is the prime time to shoot, as the sky behind the West Maui Mountains lights up and reflects across the calm water inside the marina. Wider lenses work well for capturing the full sweep of the harbor and hillside backdrop, while a telephoto lets you compress the boats against the mountains. The breakwater surface can be uneven, so wear sturdy shoes if you plan to walk its length. (Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii, United States)
