The iconic red boathouse at Maligne Lake is one of the most recognizable compositions in the Canadian Rockies, set against the lake's famous turquoise glacial water and a dramatic backdrop of snow-capped peaks. Position yourself on the dock or along the shoreline to frame the boathouse with the mountains reflected in the still water; a wider lens in the 24-35mm range works well for capturing both the structure and the full landscape behind it. Early morning gives you the calmest water for reflections and soft, even light before crowds arrive, since this is a popular destination that fills up quickly by mid-morning. Renting a canoe or kayak from the boathouse itself lets you paddle out and shoot back toward the building with the peaks rising behind it, a perspective you cannot get from the shore.
