Mount Edith Cavell Viewpoint

Mount Edith Cavell Viewpoint - Photo by Joshua Woroniecki1 / 1

Rising dramatically above Cavell Lake, this iconic viewpoint puts you face to face with the sheer north face of a 3,300-metre peak and the hanging Angel Glacier, which calves ice directly into a brilliant turquoise glacial lake below. The combination of the glacier, the jagged rock face, and the reflective lake gives you multiple strong compositions in a compact area. Work the shoreline of Cavell Lake for foreground interest and reflections, or use the alpine meadow trail to gain elevation and compress the glacier against the peak behind it. A wide angle lens handles the full scene well, while a telephoto lets you isolate the glacier's blue ice and the rock walls. Morning light hits the north face cleanly before shadows creep in, and overcast days actually work well here by softening contrast on the bright ice. The parking area is a short drive from Jasper and the viewpoint itself is an easy walk from the lot. (Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada)
