Sunwapta Falls
Sunwapta Falls is a powerful glacial waterfall in Jasper National Park, where the Sunwapta River drops roughly 60 feet into a narrow canyon of sculpted limestone, creating a scene that rewards careful composition. The bridge spanning the gorge gives you an elevated view looking straight down into the churning water, making it ideal for wide shots that capture the full drop and canyon walls together. For tighter compositions, work the railing angles to isolate the falls against the rock face, or shoot downstream where the river calms and reflects the surrounding forest. Overcast days are actually ideal here, eliminating harsh shadows in the deep canyon and giving you more even exposure across bright water and dark rock. Late spring through early summer brings peak flow from glacial melt, making the falls noticeably more dramatic. A wide angle lens handles the full scene well, and a polarizing filter helps cut glare on the water. (Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada)
