Mount Baker Tunnel
The east portal of the Mount Baker Tunnel offers a striking industrial composition where the massive concrete tunnel mouth frames a vanishing point as I-90 disappears into Mount Baker Ridge. You can position yourself along the pedestrian and cycling path that runs parallel to the freeway, giving you a safe vantage point to shoot the tunnel entrance head-on or at a slight angle to emphasize its scale. Overcast days work well here since the flat light reduces harsh shadows on the concrete and evens out the tonal range between the dark tunnel interior and the surrounding structure. A wide angle lens in the 16 to 24mm range helps exaggerate the depth and geometry of the opening, while a longer exposure at dusk can turn headlights into light trails streaming into the portal. The trail access makes it straightforward to reach without entering the roadway. (Seattle, Washington, United States)
