Porte Marguerite de Navarre, Forum des Halles
The Porte Marguerite de Navarre is one of several entrance shafts connecting street level to the Westfield Forum des Halles shopping complex in central Paris. The shaft descends several floors underground using a trio of escalators that are enclosed by curved walls and a unique ceiling that funnels upward to an oval opening. It is an amazing hidden gem for architectural photography. The leading lines are irresistible, the symmetry is strong, and the layering of lines, curves, and light creates a composition that is fun to experiment with. The constant flow of commuters passing through adds a human element that works well for long exposures or candid street work. Shooting from the base looking up will give you the most impactful framing, with the escalator rails pulling your eye toward the opening above. The curved walls also work well with wider angles that emphasize the tunnel effect. Early mornings are the best window for cleaner compositions before the transit crowds arrive, but the location is accessible whenever the Châtelet-Les Halles transit hub below is running.
