Rialto Bridge

Rialto Bridge - Photo by @ns.photos251 / 1

Spanning the Grand Canal at its narrowest point, this 16th-century stone arch bridge is one of Venice's most iconic structures, lined with porticoed shops and offering elevated views over the waterway in both directions. Shooting from the bridge itself gives you a strong central vantage point, where you can frame gondolas and vaporetti moving through the canal below with the elegant palazzos lining both banks. For the best compositions, position yourself on the steps at either end of the bridge to include the full arch as a framing element, or drop down to water level at the Riva del Ferro embankment to shoot upward and capture the bridge's scale against the sky. Early morning, before the crowds arrive, gives you clean shots and soft diffused light; blue hour adds a moody atmosphere with reflections on the canal. A wide-angle lens in the 16 to 24mm range works well here. (Venice, Veneto, Italy)
