The Grand Canal is Venice's main waterway, curving through the heart of the city and lined with centuries-old palazzos, gondolas, and vaporetto traffic that makes almost every angle photogenic. Your best compositions come from the Rialto Bridge itself, where you can shoot looking down the canal in either direction with the arched stonework framing the scene, or from the water level near the canal banks where gondolas and wooden mooring poles add foreground interest. Early morning is the ideal time to visit; the light is soft, the water is calmer, and the foot traffic is minimal compared to midday. A wide angle lens works well for capturing the full sweep of the canal and architecture, while a short telephoto lets you compress the layers of boats and buildings. Water taxis and vaporettos create wake that can blur reflections, so patience between boat passes helps. (Venice, Veneto, Italy)
