Lead Cove is a small hamlet along the scenic and historical Baccalieu Trail on the Bay de Verde peninsula (on the Avalon Peninsula, NL). Follow signage for the "Lead Cove Hostel" on Trinity Road S (Route 80). Drive past the house with the red wooden box and white statues on the gates; and continue down the narrow gravel road. The root cellar will be on the left side of the road. This is a traditional "Earth Berm" – built at ground level and/or partially above ground. The root cellar is traditionally used to store vegetables and fruit. Root cellars keep food from freezing during the winter and keep food cool during the summer to prevent the spoiling and rotting of the roots, for example, potatoes, onions, garlic, carrots, parsnips, etc..
