About S Shaped Basalt
This striking geological formation sits within the Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark at High Island Reservoir, where ancient hexagonal volcanic rock columns curve dramatically into a natural S-shape along the coastal edge. The bending columns, formed from compacted volcanic ash and later warped by tectonic forces, create a naturally graphic subject that rewards tight framing as well as wider environmental shots showing the formation against the open water. A wide-angle lens works well for capturing the full sweep of the curve with the sea in the background, while a longer focal length lets you compress the layered columns into abstract patterns. Shoot during golden hour when low-angle light rakes across the rock faces and brings out texture and depth. Access requires a walk along the East Dam of High Island Reservoir; low tide gives you more foreground rock to work with and cleaner compositions without water obscuring the base of the columns.
