Saint-Hughes Parish

Saint-Hughes Parish - Photo by Shawn M. Kent1 / 1

This grand stone Catholic church in the village of Saint-Hugues is a classic example of rural Quebec religious architecture, with its imposing facade, tall steeple, and well-maintained grounds making it a rewarding subject for architectural and landscape photographers alike. Shoot from across the road or from a slight angle to capture the full height of the steeple against the sky, and use a wide-angle lens to take in the entire structure without distortion. Overcast days work particularly well here, as soft diffused light brings out the texture of the stone walls without harsh shadows. Early morning gives you clean, quiet compositions with no parked cars or pedestrians to contend with. A 24-70mm lens covers most of what you need, from wide establishing shots to tighter details on the facade and stonework. (Saint-Hugues, Montérégie, Quebec, Canada)
