Sangedatsumon Gate

Standing at the main approach to Zojoji Temple, this massive three-story vermillion gate is one of Tokyo's oldest surviving wooden structures, dating to 1622, and its scale and color make it immediately striking against any sky. The classic shot frames the gate head-on from the broad stone pathway leading up to it, letting the symmetry and layered rooflines do the work; a wide-angle lens in the 16-35mm range works well here to capture the full height without distortion. Overcast days soften the light and bring out the deep red lacquer, while blue hour adds drama when the gate is lit against a darkening sky. For a more dynamic composition, try positioning yourself to include the Tokyo Tower rising behind the gate to the right, a contrast of old and new that works especially well from a slight distance back on the approach path.
