Perched at the end of a rainbow-painted road in one of Iceland's most dramatic fjord villages, this pale blue timber church is one of the most photogenic subjects in the country. The famous rainbow street leads directly to the church entrance, making it a natural built-in leading line that draws the eye straight to the facade; position yourself low and centered on the path to make the most of this composition. Overcast days actually work beautifully here, as soft diffused light brings out the powder blue of the church without harsh shadows. Early morning gives you the best chance of an empty street, which makes a significant difference in the final image. A wide angle lens in the 16-24mm range works well for capturing both the rainbow road and the surrounding mountain backdrop in a single frame. The church is easily walkable from the village center.
