Sutton Lake

Sutton Lake is a quiet, reed-lined coastal lake tucked just inland from the Oregon Dunes, offering reflections, marshland textures, and a wild, undeveloped feel that rewards patient photographers. The irregular shoreline creates natural foreground interest, and the stands of reeds and grasses along the eastern edge work beautifully as framing elements or subjects in their own right. Early morning is the best time to visit, when mist often sits low over the water and the surface turns glassy, giving you clean mirror reflections of the surrounding vegetation and sky. A wide-angle lens handles the expansive lake and dune-backed horizon well, while a longer focal length lets you isolate shorebirds and waterfowl in the marshes without disturbing them. The Forest Service boat ramp gives you easy water-level access, and getting out on the water by kayak puts you right among the reeds for more intimate compositions. (Florence, Oregon, United States)
