Darlingtonia State Natural Site
This small state natural site near Florence protects a rare bog filled with Darlingtonia californica, also known as the cobra lily, one of the few carnivorous pitcher plants native to the Pacific Northwest. The translucent hood and twisted, forked leaves create striking macro subjects, and the dense clusters of plants give you the opportunity to fill the frame completely with texture and organic patterns. Get low with a macro or short telephoto lens to isolate individual plants against the soft green background of the bog. Overcast days are ideal here since diffused light eliminates harsh shadows and brings out the subtle greens and purples of the leaves. The boardwalk keeps you from sinking into the wet ground and positions you close to the plants without damaging them. Visit in late spring when the plants are at peak growth and the hooded structures are fully formed. (Florence, Oregon, United States)
