Tan Teng Niah

Tan Teng Niah is a brilliantly painted Chinese villa tucked into the heart of Little India, widely considered the most colorful building in Singapore. Built in 1900, its ornate facade is layered with vivid contrasting hues across multiple tiers, making it an irresistible subject for architectural detail shots and wide-angle compositions alike. Position yourself on the narrow street directly in front to capture the full symmetry of the facade, or move closer to isolate individual panels of color and decorative trim. Overcast days are ideal here since direct sunlight creates harsh shadows and washed-out colors, while the soft diffused light of an overcast morning or the golden hour just after sunrise gives you rich, saturated tones without glare. A 24-35mm lens works well for the full structure in context, and a longer focal length lets you pull out the intricate painted details. The site is easily walkable from Little India MRT station.
