Thrihnukagigur
Thrihnukagigur is a dormant volcano on the Reykjanes Peninsula where you can descend by open cable lift into an ancient magma chamber, putting you inside a cavern large enough to fit the Statue of Liberty. The interior walls are streaked with dramatic mineral colors, deep reds, oranges, purples, and blacks, created by centuries of geological activity, and the scale of the space is difficult to capture but incredibly rewarding when you get it right. Shoot upward toward the narrow volcanic opening above to show the contrast between the dark chamber walls and the light spilling in from the surface; a wide angle lens in the 16-24mm range works best here. The diffused light inside the chamber is fairly consistent regardless of time of day, so exposure and timing matter less than composition. Bring a tripod as the low light conditions inside the chamber will require slower shutter speeds. (Hafnarfjordur, Iceland)
