Álafoss
Álafoss is a compact but characterful waterfall on the Varmá River, made distinctive by the contrast between its two very different backdrops. From one bank you get a natural composition with green hillside framing the cascade, while the opposite angle puts the historic 1896 wool factory buildings behind the falls, giving you an unusual industrial and water pairing that is hard to find elsewhere. A wide or mid-range zoom in the 24-70mm range works well for both compositions. Overcast days are ideal here since the soft, even light reduces glare on the water and brings out the greens and textures in the stonework; bright midday sun can wash out the scene. The site is easy to reach from Reykjavik in under 20 minutes, and you can walk right to the water's edge on both sides to shift between the two very different looks the location offers.
