Toronto Harbour Light
This compact red-and-white lighthouse sits at the eastern tip of the Leslie Street Spit, a unique man-made peninsula that juts into Lake Ontario and gives you an isolated, almost wild feel surprisingly close to downtown Toronto. The lighthouse itself is modest in size, so the real opportunity here is using it as a foreground element against the city skyline to the west, especially at sunset when the light warms the Toronto skyline and reflects across the lake. A wide-angle lens works well for pairing the lighthouse with the water and sky, while a telephoto lets you compress the distance and pull the downtown towers in closer behind it. The spit is a nature reserve, so access is limited to weekends and holidays when the Tommy Thompson Park shuttle or a long flat walk gets you out to the point. Arrive with enough time to explore the rocky shoreline edges for low-angle compositions. (Toronto, Ontario, Canada)
