Trans Am Totem
Trans Am Totem is a striking public sculpture near False Creek, where a towering stack of crushed cars rises from a carved cedar trunk, creating one of Vancouver's most surreal and photogenic urban landmarks. Shoot from ground level with a wide angle lens (16-24mm works well) to exaggerate the height and capture the full stack against the sky; a low angle looking straight up gives the piece a dramatic, almost overwhelming presence. Overcast days are ideal since the diffused light eliminates harsh shadows and brings out the texture of both the rusted metal and the carved wood base. Early morning gives you the quietest conditions with minimal foot traffic. The sculpture sits at street level with open space around it, so you can walk the full perimeter and experiment with different backgrounds, including the industrial streetscape that adds context to the piece's commentary on car culture.
