View of Half Dome
Perched just below North Dome, this viewpoint gives you one of the most dramatic and unobstructed looks at Half Dome's sheer northwest face, with Tenaya Canyon dropping away below and the High Sierra stretching out behind. The elevation and open exposure mean you are shooting across open air rather than through trees, which keeps your frame clean and gives the granite real presence. Try a medium telephoto in the 70-200mm range to compress the canyon and pull Half Dome closer, or go wide to include the sweeping ridgelines on either side. Early morning light hits the face with warm directional color before the sun climbs too high, and partly cloudy days can add dramatic atmosphere. The hike to reach this spot is strenuous and takes several hours from the valley, so plan an early start and bring layers since the exposed ridge gets cold and windy.
