Pier 7 stretches out into the Embarcadero waterfront and gives you one of the most satisfying compositions in San Francisco, with the historic riverboat San Francisco Belle anchored in the foreground and the Bay Bridge spanning the background. Walk to the end of the pier and shoot back toward the moored vessel, using the wooden pier railing or planks as a leading line to anchor your foreground. A moderate telephoto lens, something in the 70 to 135mm range, works well for compressing the distance and stacking the Belle against the bridge. Golden hour in the late afternoon and evening is the prime window here, as the light warms the rust and red tones of the vessel and the bridge lights begin to glow at dusk.
