Virginia Falls is a powerful cascade in Glacier National Park, dropping over fifty feet through a rocky gorge fed by glacial meltwater. The falls reward a roughly three-mile out-and-back hike along the Saint Mary Falls trail, so you pass two shooting locations in one trip. Position yourself on the rocks near the base for a wide shot that captures the full drop with the surrounding canyon walls framing the scene; a wide angle lens in the 16-24mm range works well here. The turquoise glacial water pops best on overcast days when soft diffused light reduces harsh shadows and contrast in the gorge. Early morning visits are strongly recommended since the trailhead parking fills quickly; using the park shuttle is a reliable alternative. A polarizing filter helps cut glare off the water and deepens the color of the falls against the dark stone. (Glacier National Park, Montana, United States)
