Windsor Station

Built in 1889, Windsor Station is a Romanesque Revival masterpiece of rough-cut grey stone, arched windows, and ornate masonry that rewards careful compositions. The exterior facade along de la Gauchetière Street gives you strong symmetry to work with, and getting low to emphasize the arched entryways against the sky adds drama to wide-angle shots. The building sits adjacent to the Bell Centre and across from Dominion Square, so you have room to back up and capture the full scale of the structure. Overcast days work exceptionally well here, as the diffused light brings out the texture in the stone without harsh shadows cutting across the facade. A wide-angle or standard prime lens suits the architecture best. The surrounding streetscape adds historical context, so including period lampposts or pedestrians can give a sense of scale.
