Blåvatnet, which translates to "the blue lake," sits in the mountains above Svensby and gets its striking turquoise color from glacial silt suspended in the water, eroded from the Lenangsbreen glacier that looms above. The combination of that vivid water color, the glacier, and the surrounding peaks gives you multiple strong compositions to work with. Shooting from the lake's edge with the glacier reflected in the still water works particularly well, and a wide angle lens lets you capture both the foreground color and the dramatic backdrop together. A telephoto can isolate the glacier against the ridgeline for a more compressed, powerful shot. Overcast days often enhance the surreal blue tones rather than washing them out, and midday light hits the water well given the high latitude. The hike in takes roughly two hours each way on a marked trail from Svensby, so plan for a half-day outing and wear proper footwear. (Svensby, Troms og Finnmark, Norway)
