Bloedel Conservatory

Bloedel Conservatory - Photo by whereitsb1 / 1

Bloedel Conservatory sits at the top of Queen Elizabeth Park, housed inside a striking triodetic dome that is itself worth photographing before you even step inside. The geodesic copper structure catches light beautifully from outside, especially in the late afternoon when the dome glows warm against the sky. Inside, you will find over 100 free-flying birds alongside tropical plants, orchids, and flowering trees, all bathed in soft diffused light that makes for flattering, natural-looking images. A telephoto lens in the 70-200mm range works well for isolating birds perched among the foliage, while a wide angle helps capture the full sweep of the interior canopy. Arrive when the conservatory opens to avoid crowds and get the birds at their most active. Watch your backgrounds carefully since the interior can get busy, and look for clean perches where birds stand out against green or bright blooms. (Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada)
