Bridge Ruins
These crumbling concrete bridge pillars stand in the glacial river near Fjallsárlón, offering a striking foreground element with the Vatnajökull ice cap and surrounding mountains filling the background. Position yourself low on the riverbank to shoot between or alongside the massive pillars, using them as framing devices or leading elements that draw the eye toward the glacier beyond. A wide angle lens works well here to capture both the scale of the ruins and the dramatic landscape behind them. The light is best in the golden hours, when warm tones contrast beautifully against the cold grey concrete and icy blues of the glacial water. The river level can vary, so wear waterproof footwear if you want to get close to the water's edge for the lowest and most dramatic perspective.
