Glacier Ice Shelf
Fjallsárlón is a quieter, less visited glacial lagoon than its famous neighbor Jökulsárlón, but it offers just as much drama with iceberg-filled water sitting directly beneath the sweeping tongue of Fjallsjökull glacier. The combination of floating blue-white ice, the glacier face, and surrounding volcanic mountains gives you multiple layers to work with in a single frame. Shoot from the lakeshore to place icebergs in the foreground with the glacier as your backdrop, or walk along the bank to find reflections when the water is calm. Overcast light softens harsh shadows and brings out the blue tones in the ice beautifully; golden hour adds warm contrast against the cold whites. A wide angle lens handles the full scene well, while a short telephoto lets you isolate individual icebergs. The site is accessible directly from the Ring Road with a short walk to the water.
