Hofskirkja Church
Hofskirkja is one of Iceland's last remaining turf churches, a low-profile structure of stone, timber, and thick grass-covered roofing that seems to grow directly out of the surrounding landscape. The church sits in the small village of Hof against the dramatic backdrop of Öræfajökull glacier and Vatnajökull National Park, giving you a rare chance to combine intimate architectural detail with vast Icelandic scenery in a single frame. Shoot from a low angle to emphasize the turf roof and let the glacier loom behind it, or step back with a wide lens to capture the full context of the surrounding farmland. Overcast days work beautifully here, softening the light and bringing out the greens of the roof. The site is accessible directly off the Ring Road and is unfenced, so you can walk freely around the structure to find your angle. A 24-35mm lens suits most compositions well.
